SORT BY COMMON NAME, FLOWER SHAPE, OR COLOR

You’re staring at a wildflower... now what?

STEP. 1 Tap the drop-down menu and choose how to sort: First by common name or color, they by flower shape. Tap “Apply” and you’ll see the list of selected flowers with thumbnails. If you know the scientific name, scroll to the search bar at the top of the “Everything” menu and tap in the name.

STEP 2. Scroll through the thumbnails and check out the best candidates until you find a match. The easy to understand plant description describe the flower and leaf sizes, blooming, dates, range, and habitat type. Tap the description photo to see a slide show with close-ups of flower, leaves, the full plant, and even similar species that may be confusing.

Similar Species descriptions and photos aid in identification.

Central Texas is famous for its scenic wildflower landscapes. Many descriptions includes calendar-quality photography.

From the Pineywoods of East Texas with 60 inches of rain annually  to the West Texas Chihuahua Desert with 8 inches/year, Texas has 10 ecological zones, each with its own distinctive vegetative association. The range of many wildflower species roughly follows the 5 geographical regions chosen here, but plants don’t always respect arbitrary boundaries. Many grow in more than one region and some occur statewide, while others are limited on the planet to only a few Texas counties. These regional guides highlight the most common wildflower seen, as well a few significant rare and endangered species.
